There is no Arenberg event at ICF organization championships. CIPS has that event as either flying or spinning type since very beginning at 60s of last century.
Hard to recognize that event within results. Somewhere we can see just accuracy, somewhere we can see arenberg. We are sure the name "Arenberg" is regularly named since 1973.
In the past caster was walking around the target in 180° angle. First and last points were in a line through the target.
A change since 1993 made 90° angle.
Event checks caster ability do short and long casts with different ways of casting. Simulation of spinning fishing at river. Some times the cast is hard because of tree branches. Caster has to get his bait below that branches or stop the fly of bait in front of the other side of river. Some times he has to cast having bait on the left or the right side of a body, etc.
Those abilities are checked at arenberg, a square target of cloth or plastic with 5 concentric rights of white color. First ring is mostly covered by black target of 75cm diameter. Other rings are bigger, the last one is 3.15m diameter long. Mostly the target square length is between 3.25 and 3.35 meter.
Event is started at left side with 10m distance. Caster makes two cast with style having plug below his or her reel. Then moving right to another position of 12m distance where the cast must be done having plug on the right side of the body. After another two casts moving to the longest distance of 18m casting with style having plug above the rod. Then moving to 14m position, casting with plug on the left side of body. Then last two casts at 16m distance position. There the style of cast is free, mostly having plug above the rod as it is much easier than other styles.
So 10 cast per event. Hitting the black target is counted as 10 points cast. When missing the black target points are depended on the area of rings. With bigger ring less points got. Smallest one is for 8 points, then 6, 4 and the biggest ring is for 2 points. Anything else is zero.
No one cares how high the cast is, it is up to the caster because. But high cast makes a problem to compare distance of flying plug against the square. Good casters prefer casts up to their eyes because the can easily compare the distance and choose power for slowing the flight. When casting, the plug must not touch the ground or it looks like cast and caster gets 0 points for it.
So 10 casts for each caster. 2 cast from each of 5 positions. Distances 10-12-18-14-16 meters. Maximum 100 points per event.
Time is limited. All 10 casts must be done during 5 minutes. Mostly everything done within 3 minutes. At championships faster time with same result determines the winner.
Best lady of this event was Jana Maisel (Germany). Won the event for 10 times. The fastest 100 points got in 1 minute and 35 seconds (Hluboká nad Vltavou, 2011).
Best man of this event is Patrik Lexa. Won it for 4 times. First gold medal he got as 16-years old boy, beating all adult men in Varna (1988).
